What features should I look for when choosing a web host?

You should always know what you need and become as informed as possible on the subject of web hosting.  This will make your search much easier.  The following list is not definitive, but it will give you a good start:

a) Do you want a shared or dedicated server?

This will depend solely on your requirements and budget. You may be better off with a dedicated server than a shared server.

  • If you have a high level of traffic, dedicated servers are typically used.  A high level of traffic requires a high level of security.

  • If the web hosting user wishes to run his/her own customized software and applications rather than the standard ones supplied by the host, then a dedicated server would be the right choice.

  • If you do not have a big site that will be receiving a lot of traffic, then shared should be fine for you.

b) Are you and the prospective web host a good match?

Your host's server, software and support services must be compatible with the skills and software that you (or your design team) are using.  If not, if you are working in a Unix environment, for instance, it makes little sense to choose an NT host.

  • There will be some features that you need and some offered that you don't need in all hosting plans.

  • Be sure to focus on the essentials that are required to launch your website. You may want all the nice extras but you might not use them.

  • It's a good idea to choose a host that will allow you to expand and upgrade your plan as and when your website grows.

  • For example, if you want to start selling online, an additional e-commerce option for an extra fee will be easier and quicker to implement than looking for and transferring to a new host.

c) Is the web host flexible and can I upgrade?

It may be the case that you do not need a database solution right now, but you might need one in the future.

  • By the same token, a shared hosting arrangement may be fine for you now, but if your traffic levels explode, you might need one in a years' time.

  • It is always easier to remain with one host than to switch.

  • Therefore, when choosing a host, keep your possible future needs in mind and also keep in mind whether the host will be able to accommodate them.
