How do I run a traceroute on Windows, Linux and Mac?

In order to do this, follow these simple steps:

Windows OS:

  1. On your computer, open a command prompt.

  2. Within the prompt, type tracert yourdomain

The text file will contain the results of your traceroute.  You can run the command using your domain name or your IP address.

Mac OS:

  1. On your local computer, double click the hard drive icon.

  2. Open the Applications folder.

  3. Open the Utilities folder.

  4. Open Network Utility.

  5. Select the Traceroute tab.

  6. Enter the domain name or IP address of your website and click Trace.

Linux OS:

Open a terminal window and type traceroute -I domain.com. The -I option is necessary so that the traceroute uses ICMP. You can also use traceroute with an IP, i.e. traceroute -I 1.2.3.4# traceroute.
